It is funny how a Hallmark holiday can cause so many emotions. I know that some people get really wrapped up in the day and others do not celebrate it. I am somewhere in the middle of the two. I like to celebrate it but in a realistic way. I do not need anything over the top but I need something!
I’ve had many Valentine days where I did not have a significant other. I was not able to share in the joy of this holiday the same way many did. What I learned during those years to show my love for those in my life. I continue this tradition now. I make sure I send my close friends, daughter and sister something for Valentine’s Day. Of course I got my husband something too, but that was a given.
Interesting Valentine’s Day Facts :
The US Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas!
The association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines!
In Mexico, Valentine's Day is known as "Dia del Amor y la Amistad" (Day of Love and Friendship). Although it is similar to the United States' version in many ways, it is also common to see people do "acts of appreciation" for their friends.
Thanks to a concentrated marketing effort, Valentine's Day has emerged in China, Japan, Korea and India as a day on which women, and less commonly men, give chocolate or flowers. It has become an obligation for many women to give chocolates to all male co-workers. ( This better not start in the US! I will not participate! )
